How are Steel Beams used in Marine Construction?

Steel beams, in the form of wide flange beams and H-pile, play important roles in bridge construction, cofferdam construction, and the construction of other marine structures. Wide flange beams are hot-rolled, structural steel beams individually shaped either like a capital “I” or “H.” They get their shapes from their parallel flanges, which are connected by a central web. What are Iowa Precast Concrete Temporary Barrier Specifications?

The Iowa Department of Transportation’s general instructions are as follows:

  1. For loop bars 6d1, 6d2, and 6d3, use ¾” smooth steel bars with a minimum yield strength of 60 ksi, a tensile strength of not less than 1.25 times the yield strength but a minimum of 80 ksi, a minimum 14% elongation in 8 inches, and passing a 180 degree bend test using a 3-1/2” pin bend diameter.
  2. Install loops within 1/8” of the plan dimensions.
  3. Use Grade 60, ASTM A615 for all other reinforcements. Do not lift or move using loop bars 6d1, 6d2 or 6d3.
  4. Provide for an approved monitoring schedule with a person on call and available 24 hours a day, each day of the week, to realign barrier which has been struck. Initiate service within one hour of notification of need.
  5. Unless stated otherwise in the plans, the barrier rail sections should be the property of the Contractor. Remove from the site upon completion of work.
  6. Following removal of anchorage, fill all holes with an approved non-shrink grout.
  7. Tapered end section is not designed for use within 30 feet of traffic on facilities with speed limits 55 mph or greater, nor within 10 feet of traffic on facilities with speed limits 40 mph to 50 mph.
  8. Estimated quantity of concrete for one taper section is 0.6 cubic yards.
  9. Include the cost of anchorage, when required in the price bid for "Temporary Barrier Rail, Concrete.”
  10. Permanently mark one end of each rail section with manufacturing information. The “marked end” is that end of the barrier having one loop bar at the top and two loop bars at the bottom. Include the following information in the marking:

Iowa Precast Concrete Temporary Barrier Elevation Details

Precast concrete barriers in Iowa should conform to the following dimensions and include the following features, according to the IDOT elevation view specifications:
  • Length: 12’-6”
  • Height: 32”
  • Corners: ¾” chamfer
  • On the right side, the distance between top of barrier and first loop bar should be 6”; the distance between top loop bar and middle loop bar should be 3”; the distance between middle loop bar and bottom loop bar should be 17”; the distance between bottom loop bar and bottom of the barrier should be 6”
  • On the marked end, the distance between top of barrier and first loop bar should be 7-1/2”; the distance between top loop bar and middle loop bar should be 17”; the distance between middle loop bar and bottom loop bar should be 3”; distance between bottom loop bar and bottom of the barrier should be 4-1/2”
  • There should be 3-3/8” plus or minus 1/8” measured from the face of the rail to the outside edge of the loop bar
  • Each barrier should include two symmetrical lifting slots that are 3” high

The Colorado Department of Transportation outlines specifications regarding the details for the stabilization of permanent or temporary pinned precast type 7 concrete barriers, including general notes, a plan view of S bar ends, an elevation view with stabilization pin details, and stabilization pin details.

Colorado Precast Type 7 Concrete Barrier Stabilization General Notes

  1. Pins should be hot-dipped galvanized after fabrication.
  2. For terminal anchoring of the permanent installation of precast type 7 concrete barrier, refer to the end anchorage detail on standard plan M-606-13, sheet 1, which is provided by the Colorado Department of Transportation.
  3. An optional 3 inch maximum tapered end point may be included on the stabilization pin to facilitate driving.

  • S bars should be 16-1/4” long when measured in total from end to end; each outer leg should be 12-1/2” long
  • The barrier should include a 12:1 taper (typ.) at each S bar end

  • Length: 13-1/2”
  • Distance between ground line and first #4 S bar: 4”
  • Width between the end of the S bar and the side of the barrier: 4-3/4”
  • Diameter of bars: 1” (typ.)
  • Recess to be 3” width (typ.)
  • Fill recess with grout after placing pin
  • A stabilization pin is required through the barrier surfacing into the subgrade. Drilled holes are required for concrete pavement. Use two pins for each end in each unit.
  • Form a hole for the pin with 1-1/2” O.D. PVC plastic pipe (which is to be left in place)

What are the Colorado Precast Type 7 Concrete Barrier Specifications?

The Colorado Department of Transportation outlines specifications regarding the proper dimensions for precast type 7 barriers, including general notes and specifications.

Colorado Precast Type 7 Concrete Barrier General Notes

  1. All steel reinforcing should be 2 inches clear of the nearest surface of concrete unless otherwise shown. Reinforcing steel should be Grade 40 minimum.
  2. Concrete should be Class D.
  3. All permanent precast barriers used to replace other concrete barriers should be in new condition, undamaged and with no repairs.
  4. For temporary installations, install with a minimum of 4 feet distance from the centerline of the concrete barrier to any obstructions behind it. For temporary installations with less than 4 feet minimum distance, stabilization pins should be used on each barrier unit adjacent to, and within 10 feet of both sides of the obstruction.
  5. The flare rate for temporary installations should be 10:1 or flatter unless otherwise approved by the engineer.
  6. Stabilization pins should be used to anchor each 10 foot unit in all permanent installations.
  7. The month and year that the precast type 7 concrete barrier was manufactured should be molded into one end of each 10 foot barrier unit.
  8. Approved non-shrink grout should be used for grouting over all pins and grouting of scuppers.
  9. When hydraulic analysis allows, scupper may not be needed on:
a. Median installation with inlet drainage.b. Shoulder barrier on high edge of a superelevated shoulder.c. Median barrier on a crest vertical curve.d. Permanent barrier, if specific on plans.
  1. All incidental work and materials such as connecting pins, anchors, bolts, grout and excavation for end anchorage will not be paid for separately, but should be included in the work.
  2. One-inch diameter threaded inserts may be cast in place to facilitate lifting for temporary barrier applications only.
  3. Retroreflectorization is required on barriers.

Colorado Precast Type 7 Concrete Barrier General Notes

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation elevation view details, precast type 7 concrete barriers should include the following features and conform to the following dimensions:
  • Height: 34”
  • Loop bars: ¾” diameter; loop bars should protrude by 2” from the end of the barrier; on the right side, there should be 14” between the end of the lower loop bar and the end of the middle loop bar, and 4” between the end of the middle loop bar and the end of the upper loop bar; these dimensions should be flipped for the left side
  • 1” chamfer or radius on each face.
  • Two 3” x 12” scuppers
  • 28” between the end of each scupper and the end of the barrier
  • Four 9’-4” #5 bars
