Should I Sell My Steel Beams?

There are many reasons why you might find yourself with used or surplus steel beams that you no longer need. Sometimes, surplus structural beam is left over from another project, such as in instances where more beam was ordered than needed, or where scraps of pipe were left over from being cut. Similarly, beam that was deconstructed from a previous project might lead to an excess. If you find yourself with extra steel beam on hand, there are many good reasons to sell it rather than hold onto it: you can make money, save storage space, and help other contractors who are looking to purchase used steel h-pile and wide flange beams.

Make Money Selling Steel Beam

There is a misconception that potential steel beam buyers (such as construction, marine, and oilfield contractors) are only interested in purchasing brand new structural steel beam. In truth, there is a substantial market for used and surplus steel beam, especially for contractors working on a budget. Furthermore, used steel beam is attractive to buyers because it does not need to be manufactured, and is therefore ready for immediate use. For each of these reasons, many potential buyers enter the market every day looking to purchase used steel beam. By listing your steel beam, you’ll have the chance to connect with these buyers.

Sell Your Steel Beam to Free Up Storage Space

Storage space is valuable and can sometimes be expensive to maintain, especially if you store your equipment on an offsite location. By selling your unneeded steel beam, you can free up storage space, saving money and resources.

Sell Your Steel Beam to Help Other Contractors

Due to increasing steel prices, the demand for used steel beam has been steadily rising. When costs are high, buyers often look for alternative options, but due to the buyer-driven market, many are finding themselves without the materials needed to move forward on their projects. If you have unneeded steel beam that you plan to hold indefinitely in storage, it might be a wise decision to sell it now. Not only will you be able to take advantage of the hot steel market, but you will be helping out a contractor who could be relying on the purchase.

What to Look for When Buying Used Steel Beams

Used steel beams come not from the manufacturer, but from a job site or other location where it’s been previously used. Though this can sometimes mean that the steel is unusable, “used” steel beam can also be like-new. Often-times, if structural steel beams have only been driven a handful of times, they will still have plenty of working life left in them. No matter whether the used beam looks worn or new, there are a few important questions to ask for before purchasing. These include:

What’s the Integrity of the Steel?

In order to ensure your project maintains its structural integrity, an engineer should consider the steel’s mechanical properties, such as toughness, strength, weight, hardness, and elasticity, then decide if the size, condition, and shape of the steel beam is good enough to withstand the desired load for its lifetime.

What is the Steel Grade?

Steel is a combination of iron and carbon. There are more than 3,500 different grades of steel, which are determined by the amount of carbon and alloys in the steel, as well as the way it was processed. Before purchasing used steel beam, it’s important to determine whether the steel grade matches your project’s requirements.

Do the Beams Come with a Mill Certification?

Though this is not required, used steel beam that comes with a mill certification has an advantage because the certification will show that the steel complies with an international standards organization (such as ANSI, ASME, etc.) specific standards.

How Many Times Has the Beam Been Driven?

The more times the steel has been driven, the less its integrity. Before purchasing used steel beam, its important to ensure that it meets the integrity standards for your project.

Is the Beam the Right Length?

And if not, can it be cut or spliced to the correct length? By confirming this in advance, you’ll save yourself the costly hassle of reselling and repurchasing the correct steel beam size for your project.

What Type of Environment Has the Beam Been Driven Into?

Even if the steel beam has been driven before, this does not necessarily disqualify it from further use. However, the type of environment in which the steel beam has been previously driven can help determine the beam’s integrity. For example, sand is softer than soil, so steel beam that has previously only been driven into sand will likely have less overall wear and tear.

Common Sizes for Steel Beam

Steel beam is sold in a wide range of sizes. Some common sizes include:

Steel Beam Application: Crane Access Trestle

A crane access trestle is a type of framework used to support a crane over a body of water. The framework, or trestle, allows cranes to operate in areas that are hard to reach or environmentally sensitive, such as rivers, lakes and wetlands. Most commonly, crane access trestles are used as an alternative to mounting a crane on a barge, or dredging a body of water to allow the crane access.

Crane Access Trestle Anatomy

Typically, a crane access trestle is comprised of driven pile bents spanned by wide flange beams, which carry the load weight. The pipe piles are usually between 24” and 36” long, with a working surface between 30’ and 40’.

Crane Access Trestle Applications and Advantages

Crane access trestles are most commonly used for building bridges or other marine structures. Since these structures must be built over or within bodies of water, crane access trestles allow the crane to enter the construction site.Crane access trestles are favored over other methods because they reduce the environmental impact of a project. This is because without the trestle, the harbor, river or other area of water in question would need to be dredged, meaning the mud, weeds and rubbish would be removed. This can be permanently disruptive and environmentally damaging, but with the use of a trestle, dredging can be avoided.

Should Crane Access Trestle Be Purchased New or Used?

Crane access trestles can be purchased both new or used, and each option comes with its own advantages. New crane access trestles are customized to suit the requirements of particular projects, allowing the trestle to sustain the weight and size of the intended crane. However, once those projects are complete, the trestles can often be adjusted for use on different projects. For example, an access trestle can be designed for a 300-ton crane, but once the project is finished, this crane access trestle can be reused or resold to accommodate a crane of similar size. In addition, trestle systems can be reconfigured to fit cranes with a different setup. For these reasons, buying a used crane access trestle is a viable option that can save your project money, so long as the sizing requirements are similar.

Common Sizes for Crane Access Trestle Steel Beams

Steel beam used for crane access trestles must be large enough to support the weight of the crane. Some common steel beam sizes used for these trestles includes:
  • W21: W21x44, W21x50, W21x57, W21x58, W21x55, W21x62, W21x68, W21x73, W21x83, W21x93, W21x101, W21x111, W21x122, W21x132, W21x147, W21x166, W21x182, W21x201, W21x223, W21x248, W21x275

Eiffel 101: 4 Tips for Buying Steel Beams

When purchasing steel beam, it’s important to price out both new and used options, take freight rates into account, and consider your project’s timing.

1. Price Out New and Used Options

New steel beam is beam that’s sold directly from the manufacturer to the consumer. Conversely, used steel beam does not come directly from the manufacturer, but rather from a job site or other location where it’s been previously used. Though used steel can include wear and tear, it can also be brand new or like new.If you’re in the market for steel beam, it’s a good idea to price out both new and used options. While many builders automatically choose new steel beam, used steel beam is often a viable, cost-effective choice. At Eiffel Trading, we offer both brand new and used inventory. Our account managers can price out both new and used options, so that you can select the best fit for your project needs!

2. Contact Eiffel Trading’s Account Managers for Freight Rates

Eiffel Trading partners with freight brokers to offer our customers the most efficient freight for a competitive price! In order to obtain the most accurate pricing, contact Eiffel Trading’s account managers to request your free freight estimate.

3. Consider Your Project’s Timing

Before purchasing steel beams, it’s important to consider timing, both for the project and for the production of the beam. If you’re purchasing new beam, you’ll need to account for the manufacturing time. Similarly, for used beam, you’ll need to consider loading and transportation times. In both scenarios, purchasing steel beam either too soon or too late can lead to unnecessary hassle and expense.

4. Let Us Help You Choose the Right Steel Beam Option

Not sure which steel beam option is right for your project? Want to ensure you’re choosing steel beams that fit your needs and your budget? Eiffel Trading offers a wide selection of both new and used steel beam at competitive prices. Contact us today, and we can help you choose the steel beam that’s right for you.

Eiffel 101: How to Protect Steel Beams from Corrosion

Though there are many benefits to structural steel beam that makes it an ideal choice for foundations, when steel is exposed to elements such as oxygen, moisture and salt, they react with the steel and cause it to oxidize. This oxidation process is called corrosion. When steel corrodes, it weakens the integrity of the metal and can, over time, cause the foundation to fall apart. Luckily, there are many ways to prevent steel h-pile and wide flange beams from corrosion, including galvanization, organic coatings, powder coatings, and maintenance.

Design Steel Beams to Resist Corrosion

It’s possible to design steel foundations in a way that minimizes the formation of rust, and therefore reduces corrosion. For example, if there are too many gaps in a foundation’s design, it can allow moisture to reach the steel beams, increasing the rate of corrosion. Similarly, bolts tend to rust where welding does not, meaning that if steel beams are installed solely with bolts, the beams will corrode more quickly. By working with an engineer, steel beam foundations can be designed in such a way to minimize the potential for corrosion.

Galvanize Steel Beams to Resist Corrosion

Galvanization is the process by which a coat of zinc is applied to h-pile and wide flange beams in order to protect against rusting. Most commonly, galvanization is done through one of two processes: hot-dip galvanizing or electroplating technology.

Apply Organic Coatings to Steel Beams to Resist Corrosion

Organic coatings create a barrier between the environmental elements that cause corrosion, such as saltwater, and the steel. There are a wide range of materials that can be used for organic coatings.

Apply a Powder Coating to Steel Beams to Resist Corrosion

Powder coatings work in the same way that organic coatings do. However, as the name suggests, powder coating are made from powdered substances. The powder is applied electrostatically and is set under heat in order to adhere to the steel beam, thereby creating a barrier between the steel and corrosive elements.

Maintain Steel Beams to Resist Corrosion

Once steel beam is installed, one of the best ways to prevent the steel from rusting is to keep it well maintained. Regular maintenance will ensure that all protective coatings remain intact and in good condition, and that any signs of rusting can be caught early and mitigated.

Eiffel 101: The Four Types of Steel Pile

There are four main types of steel pile, including sheet pile, pipe pile, h-pile and wide flange beams.

Sheet Pile

Sheet piles are sheets of steel material with interlocking edges that are driven into the ground to create earth retention systems, provide stable foundations, and to support excavation projects. Unlike other types of pile, sheet pile can act more like a wall and is commonly used for retaining walls, land reclamation, car parking lots, basements, riverbank protection, seawalls and cofferdams. The interlocking system of sheet piling allows for easy positioning and driving of the piles, as well as creating a close fitting joint that can be brushed with sealant to be made watertight.

Pipe Pile

Steel pipe pile is used to create a strong foundation for large, heavy structures such as buildings, bridges and roads. As the name suggests, the piles are made of steel pipe that’s driven or drilled deep into the ground in order to help distribute the weight of a structure down to the stronger soil or rock below. Pipe piles range in size from several inches to several feet in diameter, and they can be connected to create a pile that is hundreds of feet in length.

H-Pile

H-piles are similar to pipe pile in their function, but differ from pipe pile in their shape. H-piles are structural beams that are dimensionally square, with the same thickness in the flange and web. When compared to other types of pile, the H-pile beam design provides better weight distribution over a wider area and can support larger and heavier structures, such as tall buildings and factories. Individual piles have been tested to withstand loads of 1,000 tons.

Wide Flange Beams

Wide flange beams are most similar to h-pile beams, but instead of equal flange and web thickness, wide flange beams have disproportionate dimensions. Wide flange beams include a central web that connects two parallel end units, known as “flanges.” Wide flange beams have high loadbearing capacity while also being light in weight, which is what makes them a popular choice in construction and foundation projects. They are utilized for a wide variety of heavy civil applications including combi-walls, bridge foundations, and much more.

Eiffel 101: 5 Tips for Selling Steel Beams

When listing your structural steel beams for sale, it’s important to take quality photos of the beams, to show photos of the beams after they’ve been uninstalled, to set the beams at a fair market price, to be upfront about defects, and to remember to include the beams’ certifications, when available.

1. Take Quality Photos in Good Light

When you take high quality photos of your steel beams, potential buyers will get a better sense of what you’re offering, and will therefore be more likely to act. Luckily, you don’t need expensive camera equipment to get the best shot; good-quality daylight and a clean phone lens should be enough. Furthermore, you should aim to take multiple photos from different angles to ensure you’re showcasing your beams in their entirety.

2. Take Photos of Beams After Uninstalling

Buyers want to see exactly what they’re purchasing, and they might hesitate to go through will a sale if they can’t view the entire beam. To help make your steel beams more marketable, take photos of the beams after uninstalling.

3. Set Beams at a Fair Market Price

If your steel beams aren’t selling, it might be because you’re failing to match steel’s current market price. Do some research on steel prices and the going rate for similar beams to ensure your setting a fair price. Keep in mind that steel is priced differently depending on location, meaning that your region will affect your price; steel tends to sell for cheaper in hard-to-reach areas, for example, and might be further marked down in order to account for buyer accessibility and extra trucking costs.

4. Be Upfront About Defects

The goal should never be to trick potential buyers into overlooking a beam’s defects. Instead, be upfront an honest about any welds, stiffeners or abnormalities in your steel beams, and price your beams accordingly.

5. Remember to List Certifications

Steel beams that include a certification are more desirable than beams without a certification. If your steel beams are certified, be sure to include that information in the listing.

What Is an Overhang Stripping Buggy?

A lot goes into the process of creating a bridge deck overhang, and the process is one of the more complicated ones involved in bridge construction. Overhang forming through the use of bridge overhang brackets and overhang formwork is usually the first step of the process. Then, the screed rail is placed, the bridge rail is installed, and finally, bridge overhang brackets and any other formwork are removed/stripped.An overhang stripping buggy is used to remove overhang brackets and overhang formwork from a bridge during bridge construction once the bridge deck is complete or the overhang brackets are no longer needed. An overhang stripping buggy is a cart-like fixture with work platform space that is temporarily attached to a bridge deck to allow easy access to overhang brackets and formwork that need to be stripped in order to complete overhang construction. Access to overhang brackets and formwork from below is often difficult if not impossible. An overhang stripping buggy saves the day by putting workers at eye level with overhang areas. And it offers easy and safe access to the brackets as well as nearby areas of the bridge deck.

FEATURES

A typical bridge deck overhang stripping buggy comes with the following features:
  • A design that allows for secure attachment to bridge decks in order to access bridge overhang areas
  • A caged descent ladder and accompanying landing platform on the outboard side of the buggy to provide an adequate amount of clearance and space for overhang stripping to be safely and efficiently accomplished
  • A design that allows for the buggy to be moved/shifted along a bridge deck to reach various cycles of overhang stripping
  • The capability to enable access to overhang bracket undersides as well as overhang formwork along the entire overhang work platform
  • Around 1,000 lbs. of work platform capacity
Overhang stripping buggies are also often sold with a pair of electric winches that make raising and lowering them quite simple.Note: A cantilever stripping buggy is another type of stripping buggy used in bridge construction. It’s quite similar to an overhang stripping buggy. However, it is used in the removal of formwork used to cast cantilevers rather than overhangs.

POPULAR TYPES

United Forms Corporation is a popular and trusted manufacturer of bridge construction stripping buggies. The company offers a selection of buggies to meet the specific needs of various projects. Their 10-105 bridge deck stripping buggy, 835 cantilever stripping buggy, 16-9 ATX bridge deck overhang stripping buggy, 16-12 ATX bridge deck overhang stripping buggy, and 8-8 AT bridge deck overhang stripping buggy are all excellent options, depending on the requirements of a project.

RESELLING

Keep in mind that, as is the case with most forming-related equipment, overhang stripping buggies can be sold once they are used for one project and are no longer needed for another. This type of equipment holds its value and is built to be used numerous times. Those looking to buy used overhang stripping buggies will likely find a good and fairly priced selection on the market as well.

Eiffel 101: 5 Tips for Concrete Pours in the Summer

Summer concrete pours can be challenging because extreme heat and humidity can dramatically affect finished, dried concrete products. Oftentimes, concrete that’s poured when it’s too hot outside can dry too quickly or dry unevenly, both of which cause issues and impact quality. Some extra planning around the heat can save you a lot of trouble when it comes to concrete pours. Below are five tips to help your concrete project beat the heat:

1. Avoid afternoon pours.

It’s best to pour concrete in the morning, evening, or even at night, if possible. You should always forgo pouring concrete during the hottest part of the day. Excessive heat and humidity can negatively affect how quickly it sets and its overall strength when set. Oftentimes, in the blistering heat, the top layer of concrete will dry faster than the rest of the concrete. This increases the likelihood of both cracking and shrinking. It also may increase the likelihood of the formation of cold joints.Formwork, particularly steel and aluminum formwork, can heat up to blistering temperatures rapidly during the hottest part of the day. And when formwork is too hot, it can absorb moisture from concrete and cause cracks and other issues as it sets. This is another reason that it’s your best bet to pour during times of day when temperatures are cooler.

2. Store formwork and other materials in the shade.

When formwork is not in use, it should be stored in covered/shaded areas. This will help you avoid any issues with warping or heat-related damage and help you ensure that they aren’t excessively hot when you do use them.

3. Don’t overlook aggregates.

Aggregates including gravel, sand, and stone help give concrete extra strength when they enter into the mix. If you’re concerned about concrete shrinking in the summer, adding in some extra aggregates can be a great way to help you avoid this. Make sure you store aggregates in a shaded area, if possible, while you aren’t using them. If aggregates are too hot when you mix them into concrete, they can affect the overall temperature of a pour. You can also cool them down with water right before you use them.

4. Avoid pouring when understaffed.

Vigilance during concrete pours is especially important during the summer. You want workers to be able to monitor concrete during every stage of the pouring process: from when it’s poured to the finishing stage. Avoid leaving concrete unattended, and make sure there are enough staff members dedicated to a pour to see it from start to finish.

5. Mix offsite.

If it’s feasible, you should try not to mix concrete on-site in the summer heat. Mixing it outside while it’s too hot can compromise the integrity of the mix and cause issues once you start pouring and setting. It’s ideal to mix cement at a plant in a mixer (or have it mixed by a third party) and then transport it to a site using a truck or trailer. Plan the arrival of the cement for right before you plan on beginning a pour, so outside temperatures don’t affect it in the truck or trailer. As the saying goes, an inch of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you take the right preventative measures, such as those listed above, your summer concrete pours are likely to be a success.
