What are Virginia Temporary Concrete Barrier MASH Specifications?
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) outlines specifications regarding the proper dimensions for temporary concrete barriers (MASH freestanding precast pin and loop for temporary use), including general notes, surface requirements, and more.
Virginia Temporary Concrete Barrier MASH General Notes
The Virginia Department of Transportation’s general instructions are as follows:
-
The space behind the five segments of anchorage barriers should remain free of equipment, stored materials, and workers.
-
Barriers extended on a flare to the roadway clear zone should have a minimum of two barrier segments placed beyond the roadway clear zone at the same flare rate.
Virginia Precast Temporary Concrete Barrier Specifications
Virginia barriers should conform to the following specifications according to the Virginia Department of Transportation:
Surface Requirements for Barrier Placement
Barriers are TCB-1 Free Standing Barriers.
Barriers should be placed on a paved surface or a compacted aggregate base that’s a minimum of 6” in depth. Placement of barriers on grass, soil or any non-paved area is not permitted. Specifically, barriers should be placed on existing asphalt concrete pavement, hydraulic cement concrete pavement, or a minimum of 6” of 21A or 21B compacted aggregate.
All pavement should have a 4’ width minimum.
The maximum cross slope for barrier placement is 10:1.
Barriers should not be placed with 1’ of the end of the pavement.
Barrier Deflection Area
Each barrier has two sides: the traffic side and the dynamic deflection area. The dynamic deflection area, which is the side that is not the traffic side, is to remain free of equipment, stored materials and workers. The area should be 6’-8” in length.
Barrier Layout
The ends of temporary barriers should be shielded with a VDOT approved impact attenuator. Barriers should be flared away from approaching traffic. Upstream barrier anchorage requires a minimum of five barrier segments. The middle work area requires a minimum of three barrier segments. The downstream barrier anchorage requires a minimum of five barrier segments.
