What are the North Dakota Concrete Barrier Specifications?

The North Dakota Department of Transportation outlines specifications regarding the proper dimensions for concrete barriers, including general notes, plan view details, elevation details, end view details and connection details.

North Dakota Concrete Barrier General Notes

The North Dakota Department of Transportation’s general instructions are as follows:

  1. Galvanize all exposed hardware as per ASTM A153, except for the loop inserts.

  2. Use AAE-3 Concrete.

  3. Provide steel in accordance with Section 612 of NDDOT Standard Specifications.

  4. Imprint barrier ends A and B as shown with 4-inch letters. Field match A end with B end.

  5. Place barrier markers at the center of the barrier at 20’ centers.

  6. Connect barrier sections with 1-1/4” diameter A-307 double hex connecting bolt. Maintain bottom nut and washer connection for duration of barrier installation.

  7. Place barrier to minimize openings between individual sections.

North Dakota Concrete Barrier Specifications

North Dakota barriers should conform to the following specifications according to the North Dakota Department of Transportation:

Side View

Barriers should measure 10’ long and 32” high. They include two lifting slots, which are each 8” long and 2” high. The left lifting slot is set 30” from the left end of the barrier (when measured from the center of the slot), and the right lifting slot is set 30” from the right end of the barrier (when measured from the center of the slot). Each barrier includes as U1 and U2 on the left and right sides, with a height of 17-3/4” between each U1 and U2.

Plan View

According to the plan view and in reference to U3, there are “14 spaces at 8” each.”

End View

Barriers are 30” wide on the bottom and 12” wide at the top. They measure 32 high. There is a 3” vertical reveal, and the break point occurs 13” from the ground line. The height of the bottom slope is 10” and the height of the upper slope is 19”. A 10” Rad is optional.

Use the same color reflective faces as the edge line along barrier edges.

Reflective Tape

Use retroreflective, acrylic microprism material with acrylic backing, 3" wide, providing the following minimum optical performance with an observation angle of 0.1' measured in candlepower for the reflector:

Adhesive

Use factory applied solid butyl rubber that’s 1/8” thick, 2” wide on 2-1/4” wide release paper on surface 3 to temporarily mount markers to portable concrete barrier.

Marker Body

Use high impact, weatherable engineering thermo-plastic material conforming to the following:

Bolt Connection Details

Bolt connections include a double hex connection bolt that’s 1-1/4” in diameter, and a nut and washer with a 3/8” minimum thickness. Bolts should measure 25” long and include a 3” threaded end.
