What are the Nevada Portable Precast Concrete Barrier Specifications?

The Nevada Department of Transportation outlines specifications regarding the proper dimensions for portable precast concrete barriers, including general notes, plan view details, elevation details, bar details and more.

Nevada Portable Precast Concrete Barrier General Notes

The Nevada Department of Transportation’s general instructions are as follows:

  1. Reinforcing steel should be grade 60. There is a minimum clearance of two inches from reinforcing steel exterior to concrete surface (see detail section C-C).

  2. For the edge of bridges, back spacing from the back of the barrier rail to the edge of the bridge should be four feet. For the edge of shoulders, back spacing should be three feet. If back spacing cannot be obtained, anchor pin all sections adjacent to the bridge edge or shoulder with four anchor pins per section.

  3. Place reflectors as shown on detail DM-2.

  4. Top washers should be forged as integral part of the rod (or should be welded as shown on the Department’s diagrams).

  5. Rods that conform to critical dimensions, rod length and diameter, washer diameter and thickness, are acceptable if an approved top configuration for lifting the rod is provided.

  6. Concrete should be class A or AA.

  7. See ASTM D 1785.

  8. Drill 1-inch diameter holes, after placement of the rail, for anchor pinning through the pavement. Drilling operation should not damage the pavement.

  9. The weight per barrier rail panel is approximately three tons.

  10. Anchor pin the first and last units of each run, long term stationary as defined by MUTCD, part 6.

  11. Rectangular pockets may be used in lieu of conical pockets.

  12. Each ¾” diameter loop bar should be hot-dip galvanize after fabrication.

  13. When used as a permanent installation, all sections should be anchor pinned, except in medians wider than ten feet.

Nevada Portable Precast Concrete Barrier Specifications

Nevada barriers should conform to the following specifications, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation:

Plan View

Barriers measure 12’-6” in length and 12’-7” in laying length. Barriers measure 2’ wide. There is a 2” gap between the outer edge of the barrier and the outer edge of each protruding loop bar. Each barrier includes 1-1/4” holes which will hold a 1” rod. The holes are set into pockets with R = 1-3/4”. According to general note 11, rectangular pockets may be used in lieu of conical pockets. The plan view shows that each barrier includes No. 4 stirrup pairs running the length of the barrier at 1’-6” intervals.

Elevation View

Barriers measure 2’-8” high. Each barrier includes two lifting slots measuring 35-3/4” long. The distance between the leftmost edge of the left lifting slot and the left edge of the barrier is 19-3/4” (and the same is true in the reverse for the right lifting slot and right side of the barrier). Barriers include two No. 4 B-bars at their base, and three 11’-10” No. 4 bars on each face.

On the right side of the barrier, the distance between the ground line and the lowest loop bar is 8”; the distance between the lowest loop bar and the middle bar is 1’-2”; the distance between the middle loop bar and the upper loop bar is 4”.

On the left side of the barrier, the distance between the ground line and the lowest loop bar is 6”; the distance between the lowest loop bar and the middle bar is 4”; the distance between the middle loop bar and the upper loop bar is 1’-2”.

No. 4 Rebar Stirrup Bars

Stirrup bar A measures 11” wide at its widest closed side, 7” wide at its shortest open side, and 1’-8” long. Stirrup bar B measures 5” wide at its widest closed side, 9” wide at its shortest open side, and 1’-6” long.

No. 4 B – Bar

No. 4 B bar measures 1’-3” long on the left side, juts up 3”, measures 9’-7” in the middle, juts down 3”, and measures 1’-3” on the right side.

¾” Diameter A36 Loop Bar

From a top view, loop bars measure 3’-3” long, with a 2” (plus or minus 1/8”) wide gap between each parallel bar. From a side view, loop bars measure 2’-9” long before the bar bends at a 45 degree angle; the bent part of the bar is 6” long.
