What are Texas Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1) Specifications?
The Texas Department of Transportation outlines specifications regarding the proper dimensions for Type 1 single slope concrete barriers, including general notes, plan view details, pipe details, and more.
Texas Single Slope Concrete Barrier Type 1 General Notes
The Texas Department of Transportation’s general instructions are as follows:
-
Concrete strength should be Class H with a minimum compressive strength of 3,600 psi.
-
Where used, rebar reinforcement should be Grade 60 and conform to ASTM A615.
-
Precast barrier length should be 30 feet unless other specified.
-
All precast barrier edges should have a ¾” chamfer or a tooled radius.
-
All concrete, reinforcement, joint connection systems, grout, etc. as shown are considered as part of the barrier payment.
-
Conduit trough when required should be shown elsewhere on the plans, or as directed by the Engineer.
-
Regardless of the method of handling, barrier lifting points should be approximately 7-1/2 feet from the ends of the barrier. Lifting devices and attachments to barrier sections should be approved by the Engineer.
-
Surface finishing and grouting (where required) should be two parts sand and one part cement with enough water to make the mixture plastic. Grouting should be done in a manner that will assure a smooth surface. Surface finishing should be considered subsidiary to the various bid items.
-
All steel assemblies should be galvanized after fabrication in accordance with Item 445, “Galvanizing.”
Texas Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1) Details
Barriers should conform to the following specifications, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
Reinforcements for Precast Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1)
Barriers measure 30’-0” (plus or minus 1”) long. Each barrier includes #4 V1 Bars and #5 R Bars. There is a maximum spacing of 12” between the #4 V1 Bars. The first bar space may be decreased to accommodate side leave-outs. There is a distance of 5’-0” (typ.) at each end of the precast SSCB with Type X joint.
Barriers also include 2” diameter lifting pipe holes which can fit steel pipe or Sch. 40 PVC. as mentioned in note 7.
In addition to the reinforcing bars, barriers are required to include two drainage slots that measure 3” long x 3” deep, beginning 6’-0” from each end of the 30’-0” barrier segment.
End View for Precast Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1)
When viewed from an end view, barriers measure 32” tall and include a ¾” chamfer (typ.) on the top and sides. There are two lifting pipe holes which are stacked vertically over each other and spaced 8” apart. The distance from the top of the barrier to the center of the upper hole is 1’-5”, and the distance from the bottom of the barrier to the center of the bottom hole is 1’-5”.
Barriers measure 8” wide at the top and 2’-0” wide at the bottom.
Deformed Bar Anchor Details for Precast Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1)
Two bars are required per assembly, and eight are required per joint. Bars are #5 Reinforcing Grade 60 steel that measure 3’-8” in length. The long arm of the bar measures 3’-3” in length and the short “bent” arm of the bar measures 6”. The arm bends at a 70 degree angle.
Upper Connection Pipe Details for Precast Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1)
One steel pipe is required per assembly, and two pipes are required per joint. Pipes include a connection plate on one end. They measure 1’-3-1/2” long and are made of 1-1/2” standard pipe. The angle on the angled side of the pipe is 70 degrees.
Lower Connection Pipe Details for Precast Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1)
One steel pipe is required per assembly, and two pipes are required per joint. Pipes include a connection plate on one end. They measure 1’-7-1/2” long and are made of 1-1/2” standard pipe. The angled side of the pipe is 70 degrees.
(#4) V1 Bar for Precast Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1)
V1 bars above the drainage slots may be bent to accommodate 1-1/2” clear
cover as directed by the Engineer.
Section A-A for Precast Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1)
Section A-A shows the steel placement that is required at each drainage slot. There is a 1-1/2” clear cover at the bottom of the barrier, plus a 3” tall drainage slot. The first (#4) V1 bar sits 4-1/2” from the groundline. V1 bars may be cut or bent at drain slots.
Single Slope Concrete Traffic Barrier
Precast SSCB may be connected to cast-in-place SSCB. The joint connection types may be used in the cast-in-place barrier to match the precast barrier connection.
There is an optional conduit trough at the base of the barrier which measures 6” wide and 3” tall (see note 6). The top of the barrier measures 8” wide, the bottom of the barrier measures 24” wide, and the barrier stands 42” tall.
Joint Connection Type X for Precast Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1)
Type X Joint installation includes one upper connection and one lower connection. Each connection includes a connection plate (typ.), plus two #5 deformed bar anchors (typ.), and a threaded rod with two plate washers and two nuts within the connection pipe (typ.). The upper connection hardware should not extend beyond the face of the barrier.
Connection Plate Details for Precast Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1)
One plate is required per assembly. Four are required per joint. All steel fittings for joint Type X should be galvanized after fabrication in accordance with Item 445.
Plates measure 4” x 4” and include a 1-5/8” diameter hole in the center. A 1-1/2” standard steel connection pipe is inserted and welded to the plate.
Connection Bolt or Threaded Rod Details for Precast Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1)
Two threaded rods are required per joint. Rods measure 3’-6” long and are 7/8” in diameter (A325). The connection hardware should not extend beyond the concrete face of the barrier. Hex head bolts may be provided. The proper length of all hardware should be verified.
