What are Texas Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1) Joint Connections?
The Texas Department of Transportation outlines specifications regarding the proper dimensions for Type 1 single slope concrete barrier joint connections.
Texas Single Slope Concrete Barrier Type 1 Pinned Placement General Notes
The Texas Department of Transportation’s general instructions are as follows:
-
Concrete strength should be Class H with a __minimum compressive strength of 3,600 psi. __
-
Where used, rebar reinforcement should be Grade 60 and conform to ASTM A615.
-
Precast barrier length should be 30 feet unless other specified.
-
All precast barrier edges should have a ¾” chamfer or a tooled radius.
-
All concrete, reinforcement, joint connection systems, grout, etc. as shown are considered as part of the barrier payment.
-
Conduit trough when required should be shown elsewhere on the plans, or as directed by the Engineer.
-
Regardless of the method of handling, barrier lifting points should be approximately 7-1/2 feet from the ends of the barrier. Lifting devices and attachments to barrier sections should be approved by the Engineer.
-
Surface finishing and grouting (where required) should be two parts sand and one part cement with enough water to make the mixture plastic. Grouting should be done in a manner that will assure a smooth surface. Surface finishing should be considered subsidiary to the various bid items.
-
All steel assemblies should be galvanized after fabrication in accordance with Item 445, “Galvanizing.”
Texas Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1) Proprietary Joint Connections
Two proprietary joint connections are acceptable as alternates to the Type X connection.
These joint connection types are:
-
J-J Hooks by Easi-Set Industries]
-
Quick-Bolt by Bexar Concrete
If one of these connection systems are exclusively specified in the plans, prior approval for sole source use must be obtained. Details of the connection components and barrier reinforcement for these systems will be shown on the manufacturer’s shop drawings furnished to the Engineer.
Texas Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1) Joint Connections Type Q
One of the three joint connection types is called Type Q. The details for this joint connection type are as follows, as stated by the Texas Department of Transportation:
End View
The end view describes the “Quick-Bolt” pocket locations on a barrier measuring 42” tall x 24” wide (bottom) x 8” wide (top). There are two pockets, which are spaced 9-1/2” apart from their centers, and are stacked vertically on top of each other. The bottom pocket is spaced 1’-1” from the ground line.
__Elevation View for Joint Connection “Quick-Bolt” __
When viewed at an elevation view, the bolt retraction cavity should measure 2-1/2” in diameter and include a PVC sleeve that is 12” long. There are also two 7/8” diameter x 25” long rolled threaded bolts with a plate washer and nut on each end.
Texas Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1) Joint Connections Type R
The second of the three joint connection types is called Type R. The details for this joint connection type are as follows, as stated by the Texas Department of Transportation:
Section A-A Type R Rebar Grid
When viewed from Section A-A, a rebar grid can be seen inserted vertically down into the barrier panel. The grid is 3” wide and 24” tall.
Top View Joint Connection
When viewed from the top, there is a slot for a rebar grid that extends inward 10-1/2” from the left side of the barrier. This slot measures 3” wide.
(#4) V2 Bars
There are six two piece bars per barrier segment. The bars of the V2 bar do not connect, and are symmetrical down the middle. They measure 33-1/2” in length and include a notched end that is 3-1/4” long.
Welded Rebar Grid
The welded rebar grid includes three #8 bars and two #6 bars. The grid is 18” long and 17-1/2” wide. The bars are spaced 7-3/4” apart.
Texas Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Type 1) J-J Hook Joint Connections
The third of the three joint connection types is the J-J hook. The details for this joint connection type are as follows, as stated by the Texas Department of Transportation:
View from Above J-J Hook Connection
When viewed from above, it can be seen that the J-J hooks are enclosed by a connector plate that measures 2” x 2” x 3/16”. The hooks are spaced 10-7/16” from the outer edge of the right side of the barrier, and 11” from the outer edge of the left side of the barrier.
End View
An end view shows that for a J-J hook connection, four #4 stirrup bars are required. The bars measure 12” tall.
