What are Texas Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Precast) X-Bolt Connection Restrained Mash TL-4 Specifications?

The Texas Department of Transportation outlines material notes, construction notes and general notes for the use of single slope concrete barrier (precast, X-bolt connection restrained MASH TL-4) in the state of Texas.

Texas Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Precast) X-Bolt Connection Restrained Mash TL-4 General Notes

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, this barrier system has been successfully evaluated by full-scale crash tests to meet MASH TL-4 criteria. This barrier system had approximately seven inches of dynamic deflection and 1.5 inches of permanent deflection, as it contains and redirects the TL-4 (single-unit truck) errant vehicle.

The average weight of one 30 foot precast barrier is 19,960 pounds. The average weight of one precast barrier is 665 plf.

Cover dimensions stated in the Texas Department of Transportation’s specifications are clear dimensions unless otherwise noted. Reinforcing bar dimensions shown on the plans are out-to-out of the bar.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, lifting devices (such as lugs, loops, etc.) should be provided at the Contractor’s or Engineer’s direction. Locate lifting devices in the rail so as not to exceed the tensile strength of the concrete during lifting. Galvanize all permanent steel lifting components.

All exposed corners should be chamfered.

When the barrier is removed, bars BD (#8) should also be removed. Cut bars and grind them flush to the finished bridge slab or CRCP unless directed otherwise by the Engineer. Test adhesive anchors in accordance with Item 450.3.3, “Tests.” Three anchors should be tested per every 100 anchors that are installed. Perform corrective measure to provide adequate capacity if any of the tests do not meet the required test load. Damage from testing should be repaired as directed.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, all metal components of the barrier system should be galvanized.

Provide Class “S” concrete (f’c = 4,000 psi) in general, but provide Class “S” (HPC) if it’s required elsewhere.

All reinforcing steel and WWR should be galvanized if required or shown elsewhere. Provide stainless steel in accordance with Item 440.2.10, for BD (#8) bars when the bar is to remain embedded in the finished bridge slab, or if the bar is installed within continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP).

Provide Grade 60 reinforcing steel.

Provide deformed welded wire reinforcements (WWR) (ASTM A1064).

Provided welded wire reinforcements (WWR) laps, where required, which should be either uncoated or galvanized ~ D22.2 = 1’-7”.

Texas Single Slope Concrete Barrier (Precast) X-Bolt Connection Restrained Mash TL-4 DB (#8) Anchor Bar Notes

The Texas Department of Transportation instructs that DB (#8) anchor bars are embedded plumb with a Type III, Class C, D, E, or F anchor adhesive. The minimum adhesive anchor embedment depth is 5-1/4”. The anchor adhesive that’s chosen must be able to achieve a basic bond strength in tension, NBA, of 26 kips. Submit signed and sealed calculations or the manufacturer’s published literature showing the proposed adhesive anchor’s ability to develop this load to the Engineer for approval prior to use. Anchor installation, including the hole side, drilling and clean out, must be in accordance with Item 450, “Railing.”

DB (#8) anchor bar nearest to a slab expansion joint, construction joint or the end of the structure may be shifted up to 12” longitudinally along the center of the barrier in order to satisfy the minimum offset dimension.

Provide stainless steel for BD (#8) when the bar is to remain embedded in the finished bridge slab or CRCP.
