What are Nevada Portable Precast Concrete Barrier Rail Specifications?

The Nevada Department of Transportation outlines specifications regarding the proper dimensions for portable precast concrete barrier rails, including section details, barrier rod details, and more.

Nevada Portable Precast Concrete Barrier Specifications

Nevada barriers should conform to the following specifications, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation:

Typical F-Shape

Typical F-Shape barrier end sections measure 2’ wide at the bottom and 9-5/8” wide at the top. They include a ¾” chamfer and an R = 10”. The vertical reveal is 3”. Barriers measure 2’-8” tall. The bottom slope is 4-7/8” wide and the upper slope is 2-5/16” wide. Barriers are symmetrical in nature and include No. 4 bars at 2” clearance.

Elevation View at Anchor Pins Section D-D

Barriers include reflectors attached to their tops. Barrier rods are used to anchor barrier rails to the pavement; two rods should be used at each end. Form holes for barrier rods with 1-1/4” schedule 40 PVC pipe. The pipe is to be left in place. Barrier recesses should be 4” wide and should be filled with non-shrink grout after placing the rod. The rods, when installed, will be spaced 1’-3” apart from each other. Rods should be buried 1’-7-3/4” deep.

S-Bar Details

Barriers include a No. 4 S-bar at each end. Barrier rods include a barrier rod hole. Barrier rods measure 1’-4” long on each side, but measure 1’-6-5/16” long in total, since their two sides are slightly offset from each other.

Section A-A, B-B and C-C

Barriers measure 2’-8” tall, 2’ wide at the bottom and 9-5/8” wide at the top. There is a 2” minimum clearance between interior bars and the exterior edge of the barrier. Each barrier includes a 3” notched base. Barriers show a series of 1-1/2” deep x 2” tall slots, which are positioned inside the barrier.

Rod and Loop Connection Plan View

Barriers include a ¾” diameter loop bar that is hot-dip galvanized after fabrication. Where the barriers meet, there is a 1” CLR. at the rod. Barriers include a ¼” chamfer.
Loop bars interior radius is 5/8” and loop bars exterior radius is 1-1/4”.

Barrier Rod Detail

Barrier rods include a circular washer that is either 2” or 2-1/4” in diameter, with a 3/8” minimum thickness. There is a ¼” diameter hole along the circumference of the rod for 3/16” x 2-1/2” cotter pins. (This is not required if barrier rods are to be used to anchor barrier rails to the pavement). There is a 1” diameter rod, ASTM A449, which is hot-dip galvanized after fabrication. The bottom of the rod may be beveled to facilitate placement.
