What are Connecticut Temporary Precast Concrete Barrier Curb Specifications?

The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation outlines specifications regarding the proper dimensions of concrete barrier walls, including end view dimensions, connection rod dimensions, washer details and proper flare rates.

Connecticut Temporary Precast Concrete Barrier Curb

Each precast concrete barrier panel should be 20’-0” (610 mm) long and include:

  • 1-1/2” (38 mm) covers

  • 3’-0” (914 mm) drainage opening

  • One connection loop bar “A” (TYP.)

  • 5” (127 mm) between connection loop bar “A” and the top of the barrier

  • One connection loop bar “B” (TYP.)

  • 7” (178 mm) between connection loop bar “B” and the bottom of the barrier

  • A lifting key

  • A connection rod (see details below)

  • 1/2” (13 mm) chamfer TYP.

  • 2” (51 mm) cover on each end

  • Three interior horizontal rods placed at even vertical intervals

Connecticut Temporary Precast Concrete Barrier Curb End View Specifications

Proper measurements for a precast concrete barrier curb, when looking at the barrier from its end, are as follows:

  • A width of 24” (610 mm) at the bottom

  • A width of 6” (152 mm) at the top

  • A height of 32” (813 mm)

  • A 2” (51 mm) cover at the top unless otherwise noted

  • A 1-1/2” (38 mm) cover at the bottom

  • A break point 10” above the bottom of the panel

Connection rods should include:

  • Two heavy hex nuts at the top

  • One heavy hex nut at the bottom

  • One steel flat washer at the top

  • One flat steel washer at the bottom (see washer details below)

  • A rod that is 1” (25 mm) in diameter, galvanized, and 30” (762 mm) long

  • A thread connection rod that’s a minimum of 4” (102 mm) TYP.

  • All galvanized materials

  • 1-3/16” (30 mm) in inner diameter

  • 2-3/4” (70 mm) in outer diameter

Alternate designs for lifting keys, holes or other handling devices can be submitted to the engineer for approval. Expected permanent dynamic deflection is 3’ – 6” (1,148 mm) based on TL-3 crash tests with 240’ (73,152 mm) of TPCBC.
