What are Cast-in-Place Barrier Forms?
Cast-in-place barrier forms are a type of concrete formwork. Concrete formwork plays an important role in a variety of construction projects, including road, bridge, and highway construction projects, as it serves as a mold for wet concrete to be poured into in order to create a desired concrete final product of a needed shape and size. Cast-in-place barrier formwork is used to create median barriers or median parapets on the spot. The forms are transported to the necessary area for a project. Then, concrete is poured into them and sets. Once it’s done setting, the forms are removed and can be re-used for other projects. Barrier formwork is typically made of steel but may sometimes be made of aluminum or other materials.
Cast-in-Place vs. Precast
The difference between cast-in-place barrier walls and precast barrier walls is that the former uses cast-in-place barrier forms to allow concrete shapes to be constructed directly at a project site. Precast concrete barrier walls are already in the desired shape, size, and style, and they have been cast somewhere other than the project site. Additionally, precast barrier wall is typically used for temporary projects while cast-in-place is typically used for permanent applications. One of the main advantages of using cast-in-place barriers is that there’s less logistical effort required to transport heavy concrete slabs to a project location.
Styles of Cast-in-Place Barrier Forms
These forms can come in numerous styles to meet the needs of a project. They are available in all popular barrier styles including:
-
New Jersey
-
F-Shape
-
Vertical
-
Texas T5 Modified Bridge Rail (Roman Rail)
-
Temporary Barrier Rail
-
Hinged Barrier Rail
-
Slope
-
Ontario Tall Wall Median Barrier
-
Barrier Wall with Head Ejection
Cast-in-place forms are also available for median barrier caps and other concrete structures that complement the use of barriers.
Barrier styles used for particular projects often differ based on local regulations. Cast-in-place barrier forms can be created at the necessary shape and size to meet any and all local requirements, and they are widely available and easily obtainable in the most common styles.
Wadco, Symons, Southern Forms, and Wharton are some of the popular manufacturers of barrier formwork. All of these manufacturers offer barrier forms that are of the highest quality, allowing for the production of concrete barriers that are precise in size and shape as well as durable and strong.
Keep in mind that regulations at the state or national level may apply to how cast-in-place barrier forms must be used. For instance, in Massachusetts, barrier formwork should not be removed until concrete has been allowed to dry and set for at least 24 hours.
Buying and Selling Cast-in-Place Barrier Forms
Cast-in-place barrier forms can be purchased either new or used. For projects that require common styles, finding used options of the appropriate barrier formwork is quite easy and can save contractors some money. For projects that necessitate uncommon shapes, sizes, or styles of cast-in-place barrier forms, buying new may be the best decision. Used cast-in-place barrier forms cost, on average, between $100 and $150 per linear foot of formwork. New barrier formwork tends to cost a bit more. Once a project is finished and formwork is no longer needed, it can definitely be a good financial decision to try to sell barrier forms if they cannot be re-used for another project.
