Steel Beam Application: Crane Access Trestle
A crane access trestle is a type of framework used to support a crane over a body of water. The framework, or trestle, allows cranes to operate in areas that are hard to reach or environmentally sensitive, such as rivers, lakes and wetlands. Most commonly, crane access trestles are used as an alternative to mounting a crane on a barge, or dredging a body of water to allow the crane access.
Crane Access Trestle Anatomy
Typically, a crane access trestle is comprised of driven pile bents spanned by wide flange beams, which carry the load weight. The pipe piles are usually between 24” and 36” long, with a working surface between 30’ and 40’.
Crane Access Trestle Applications and Advantages
Crane access trestles are most commonly used for building bridges or other marine structures. Since these structures must be built over or within bodies of water, crane access trestles allow the crane to enter the construction site.
Crane access trestles are favored over other methods because they reduce the environmental impact of a project. This is because without the trestle, the harbor, river or other area of water in question would need to be dredged, meaning the mud, weeds and rubbish would be removed. This can be permanently disruptive and environmentally damaging, but with the use of a trestle, dredging can be avoided.
Should Crane Access Trestle Be Purchased New or Used?
Crane access trestles can be purchased both new or used, and each option comes with its own advantages. New crane access trestles are customized to suit the requirements of particular projects, allowing the trestle to sustain the weight and size of the intended crane. However, once those projects are complete, the trestles can often be adjusted for use on different projects. For example, an access trestle can be designed for a 300-ton crane, but once the project is finished, this crane access trestle can be reused or resold to accommodate a crane of similar size. In addition, trestle systems can be reconfigured to fit cranes with a different setup. For these reasons, buying a used crane access trestle is a viable option that can save your project money, so long as the sizing requirements are similar.
