How Is HDPE Pipe Used for Dredging?
HDPE pipe is a type of plastic pipe that’s used to transfer fluids and gases or to replace ageing concrete or steel mains pipelines. HDPE pipe (which stands for high-density polyethylene pipe) is flexible, highly impermeable, and suitable for high pressure pipelines. Most commonly, HDPE pipe can be seen in use for water mains, gas mains, sewer mains, slurry transfer lines, rural irrigation, fire system supply lines, electrical conduits, communication conduits and drainage pipes.
HDPE Pipe Dredging Applications
HDPE pipe has a wide range of dredging applications. Dredging is often used to remove the buildup of deposits underwater; to clear water pathways for ships to pass; to create enough space to construct bridges dams; and to remove silt and pollutants from the bottom of lakes and rivers. HDPE pipe can be used for these tasks, as well as for the removal of sediment and debris from the bottoms of lakes, rivers, harbors, and other bodies of water. Specifically, HDPE pipe can dredge both naturally deposited sediments and man-made debris such as rocks, bottom sediments, construction debris, refuse, plant matter, and animal matter on the bottom of shallow seawater and in freshwater bodies.
Advantages of HDPE Pipe for Dredging
HDPE pipe has many advantages that make in an excellent choice for dredging. It’s low in weight, making it easy to maneuver and transport. It is durable with a lifespan of 50 to 100 years, ensuring a good service life and a higher return on investment. It is resistant to chemicals, rust, decay, abrasion, impact and biological growth, meaning the pipe saves money in the long term on repairs and replacement. It is flexible, ductile, and has excellent resistance to fatigue. HDPE pipe also has leak-free joints, which are connected by butt welding, electrofusion welding, socket welding, or fusion. These welds create a homogenous joint that is at least as strong as (if not stronger than) the existing pipe, with no need to use rubber seals or jointing chemicals (such as is needed with PVC pipe). As a result, HDPE pipe is more environmentally friendly and has a longer lifespan. For all of these reasons, HDPE pipe is a popular choice for dredging applications.
Buying Used HDPE Pipe for Dredging
HDPE pipe has an extremely long lifespan that can stretch up to 100 years. Due to its longevity, corrosion resistance and durability, HDPE pipe is a good candidate for resale. Used HDPE pipe comes with the benefit of being more cost effective than pipe that is sold new. Furthermore, the pipe’s popularity means it can be found in a wide range of sizes and styles. Finally, due to its durability, used HDPE pipe often performs just as well as pipe that is purchased new. Before buying new HDPE pipe for your dredging project, consider exploring the used HDPE pipe market.
