Eiffel 101: What are Buy American Standards?

At Eiffel Trading, all of the new beams that we sell through partner mills meet the Buy American Standards, meaning that the beams are both melted and manufactured in the U.S.

BUY AMERICAN STANDARDS

The Buy American Standards stems from the Buy American Act, passed by Congress in 1933 and signed by President Hoover. This Act requires federal agencies to purchase domestic materials and products, rather than seek those same products from foreign competitors.

CONDITIONS

There are two conditions that must be present for the Buy American Act to apply to steel beams. First, the procurement of the beams must be for public use within the U.S., and second, the beams must be manufactured in the U.S. in sufficient and reasonably available commercial quantities of high quality.

Steel beams: wide flange, h-oile, and more

The requirement that steel beam must be purchased in the U.S. can be waived if the beam is 25 percent more expensive than an identical foreign-sourced product, if the beam is not available domestically, or if there’s a reason that purchasing the steel beam from foreign sources is in the public’s better interest. The President also has the authority to waive the Buy American Act under certain circumstances.
