Checklist for Selling a Used Barge
If you’ve decided to sell your barge, there are several things you can do to increase your chances of finding a buyer and selling it for a fair price. It all boils down to making the barge presentable and making sure potential buyers are aware of everything it has to offer in terms of specs. Below is a checklist to help you sell your used barge:
Get the barge in good, selling condition. Make any necessary repairs to address mechanical problems. Declutter the deck area of the barge and remove all items you don’t plan to sell with it. Clean its exterior and any interior areas thoroughly. Remove any old or rusty screws and nails and replace them. It’s also a good idea to blast/sand the barge to remove residue, corrosion, rust, and other contaminants to its exterior. If you’re selling something like an accommodation barge, doing an intensive, deep-clean of interior areas or even hiring a cleaning crew to do so may be beneficial.
Take pictures. This is essential if you’re going to be selling your used barge online. You should take several pictures of its exterior and interior features. Make sure you take close up pictures of any included equipment as well as of things like motors and extras like ladders, safety railing, and spuds. The more pictures, the better. Aim to take 10-15 pictures from different angles, and make sure they’re good, high quality photos. Blurry photos or photos taken in dim light may make it more difficult to sell your barge in the long run. You want to show it off, and good pictures are the best way to do so. Poor quality pictures can create doubt in the minds of potential buyers.
Write up a good description of the barge’s specs. The more you let potential buyers know about the barge, the better. Include information about its manufacturer, its model number, what series of products it belongs to, its dimensions, its load capacity, any included equipment, its overall condition, and even its history of use and repairs if relevant. Note if it’s been used in fresh water, saltwater, or both. If the barge comes with features like spuds and spudwells, make sure you note the dimensions of those too. Additionally, if it’s ABS classed or has some other kind of classification, make sure you include information about this in your description as well.
Pick a reasonable price. Do some market research and figure out what other, similar barges of similar age and condition are selling for. Get an idea of the average price of comparable barges. You obviously don’t want to pick a price that is either too low or too high. Finding a middle ground is your best bet and naming a price that’s around average will likely be ideal. This is, of course, unless you want to sell the barge as quickly as you can. In which case, you may want to price it a bit lower or even significantly lower than the average price of similar used barges. If you don’t mind waiting a while to get the most from a buyer, you may decide to price a little higher than average too.
Find a marketplace or other channel for selling. You’ll reach the largest number of potential buyers if you opt to sell online in most cases. Find a reputable online marketplace or other online selling channel to list your barge. Make sure the selling channel you choose has a far enough reach and actively advertises and promotes listings on the behalf of sellers. At the end of the day, you want to list your barge somewhere you can trust and somewhere potential buyers can trust.
